While Takashi Asahina’s European career took off in 1956 after conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, he didn’t conduct in the U.S. for the first time until an engagement with the Honolulu Symphony (conducting Bruckner’s 4th Symphony) in 1985.
This performance is from Maestro Asahina’s second guest conducting engagement with the Honolulu Symphony in 1987. As Tod Bowermaster, now Third Horn with the St. Louis Symphony said, these performances were “some of the most memorable concerts of my career.”
